Storage Tips That Save You Time, Space & Stress
Whether you’re renting a storage unit for a few months or storing long-term, a little planning can go a long way. The right packing strategy helps you protect your items, maximize your space, and avoid the frustration of digging through unmarked boxes. Below, we’ve answered the most common questions about how to prepare, pack, and organize your storage unit like a pro.
Storage Tips
-
Start with a clean slate. Even though our units are cleaned between tenants, it’s always smart to sweep the floor and wipe down surfaces with a mild cleaner. For added protection, lay down pallets or plastic sheeting to keep moisture from seeping up from the floor.
Want extra organization from the start? Bring in your own freestanding shelves. They’ll help you make better use of vertical space and keep smaller boxes easy to reach.
-
Plastic bins are the clear winner. They’re stackable, more durable than cardboard, and make it easy to see what’s inside. Plus, their sealed lids offer better protection from dust, moisture, and pests. Use cardboard only for short-term storage or items that don’t need long-term protection.
-
Climate-controlled storage is ideal for items that are sensitive to temperature swings or humidity, including:
Electronics (TVs, game consoles, computers)
Photos, documents, and books
Furniture (especially wood or leather)
Musical instruments
Antiques and collectibles
Seasonal clothing
At Switzer’s, both our Norman and Edmond locations offer climate-controlled options for exactly these needs.
-
Disassemble bulky items like beds, tables, and shelving when possible. Store tabletops vertically and use furniture pads or blankets to protect surfaces. Vacuum upholstery and clean wood with a quality cleaner before storage. Cover everything with breathable material (old sheets or drop cloths work great) and avoid plastic wrap, which can trap moisture.
Bonus tip: Use dresser drawers or under-table spaces to store smaller items like cords, books, or kitchen tools.
-
Back up important files from computers or phones
Remove batteries from devices to prevent corrosion
Bundle cables and store them in labeled plastic bags
Cover devices with a soft sheet or towel to keep dust out
Defrost refrigerators and remove moisture from washers/dryers
Wedge open fridge doors slightly to prevent mold and odors
Appliances should always be completely dry before storing to avoid mildew buildup.
-
Use bubble wrap or crumpled paper to individually wrap glassware, mirrors, dishes, and antiques. Store fragile items in sturdy plastic containers and label them clearly as “Fragile.” Always place these boxes on top of heavier items, never underneath. If possible, store delicate items on shelving instead of the floor.
-
Fold or roll clothes loosely to avoid creasing
Use sealed plastic bins or garment bags to protect from dust
Add silica packets or moisture absorbers to prevent mold
Hang delicate items on a rolling garment rack
Avoid storing clothes in airtight plastic bags for long periods (they can trap moisture)
-
Books should be packed flat (not standing upright) to prevent spine warping. Use acid-free paper to wrap valuable books or documents. Keep them in small boxes. Books are heavy and large boxes can be tough to move. Always store in a dry, cool space (climate-controlled is best for long-term preservation).
-
Label every box clearly – use detailed descriptions like “Kitchen – Silverware & Mixing Bowls”
Create an inventory list – note what’s in each box and take photos
Make a simple map – sketch a rough layout showing where categories of items are placed
Leave a center aisle – walkways make it easier to reach boxes in the back
Put items you’ll use often near the front – like holiday decor, seasonal clothes, or tools
Stack wisely – heavy boxes on the bottom, lighter on top
-
Yes! Try these:
Use shelves to add vertical layers
Store items inside dressers or cabinets
Slide items under tables or stack in chairs
Use vacuum-sealed bags for clothing or bedding
If stacking boxes, stagger them like bricks for stability
-
Always store items clean and dry
Avoid sealed plastic wraps on upholstered furniture
Use plastic bins with locking lids
Keep fabric items off the floor
Never store food or scented candles
Use cedar blocks or pest repellents if needed
All Switzer’s Locker Room facilities are maintained for cleanliness and security, but smart packing adds an extra layer of protection.

Absolutely! It’s an especially good idea to store these items in our Norman location, just minutes from OU’s campus. Tailgating essentials like:
Folding tables and chairs
Tents and coolers
Speakers and TVs
Games, grills, and gear
…can all be stored in a garage-style or climate-controlled unit. Just pack smart, keep it clean, and you’ll be game-day ready all season long.
